Description
The murder of a dark arts warlock.
A shape-shifting, ravenous creature on the loose.
A devilishly handsome stranger sent to investigate.
Sometimes working law enforcement for the Netherworld is a real...
Dulcie O’Neil is a fairy. And not the type to frolic in gardens. She’s a Regulator—a law-enforcement agent who monitors the creatures of the Netherworld to keep them from wreaking havoc in the mortal world.
When a warlock is murdered and Dulcie was the last person to see him alive, she must uncover the truth before she’s either deported back to the Netherworld, or she becomes the next victim.
Enter Knight Vander, a sinfully attractive investigator sent from the Netherworld to work the case with Dulcie. Between battling her attraction to her self-appointed partner, keeping a demon in check, and fending off the advances of a sexy and powerful vampire, Dulcie’s got her hands full.
As the body count increases, Dulcie finds herself battling dark magic, reconnoitering in questionable clubs and suffering the greatest of all betrayals.
Reviews
“I caught myself developing a little crush on Knight, he was the dark Knight and White Knight all rolled into one. Who doesn't love a bad boy that at times is the good guy also? To Kill A Warlock was a fascinating book, with lots of suspense and if you’re a fan of sexual tension... H.P. is a pro at it!!” ―Sparkling Reviews ★★★★★
“This novel is another testament as to why she has quickly risen to my top 10 UF author's list. This book has it all! Mystery, romance, danger, betrayal, action, powers, along with twists and turns that will have your racing through the pages to uncover the truth. I'm sure it will quickly be one of your favorite UF series too.” ―Paromantasy Reviews ★★★★★
“The men in this story *fans herself a little* were something my imagination had a great time mooning over. Okay, Knight deserves his own paragraph. Knight was the story's resident bad boy. Good looking with a cocky attitude, he came across like a constant flirt but someone who also knew when the moment required seriousness. He was a FABULOUS choice to play opposite Dulcie and I loved reading how he interacted with her. To Kill A Warlock is a definite keeper and one that I'll read over and over again. You won't be disappointed.” ―The Bookish Snob Reviews ★★★★★

To Kill A Warlock An Urban Fantasy / Paranormal Romance Series Dulcie O'Neil Book 1 edition by HP Mallory Paranormal Romance eBooks
The Good: writing style, editing & a decent mystery even though I knew 'whodunit' a quarter of the way in.The Bad: Dulcie. She's unreasonably surly. All the time, to everyone....except the real criminal. Try as I might I found myself not really caring much about her & didn't feel a connection with her. For a protagonist of a series, that doesn't bode well. Dulcie is quite self congratulatory when it comes to how badass she is, how superior her magic is, and how great she is at her job. Sadly, she only told us these things and never showed us since she screwed up - a lot - and couldn't seem to grasp "undercover" police work. The 'suitor wannabe's' are comical.
Since I'm stuck with the rest of the books in the series I hope it gets better and the kinks are worked out to make Dulcie a bit more likeable....and waaaaay less surly.
And dear author please please please cease to word count of the "holy Hades", "hot as Hades", "Hades be damned" every freaking page!!! That alone made me want to throw the book across the room.

To Kill A Warlock An Urban Fantasy / Paranormal Romance Series Dulcie O'Neil Book 1 edition by HP Mallory Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
I really wanted to like this book. I'm a huge fan of police procedurals with strong, world-weary female leads and I love paranormal romance. Just based on that, this story should've been catnip for me. And the idea for the story is really cool—Dulcie, our fairy detective/frustrated romance novelist protagonist tries to track down a killer in the paranormal underbelly.
The up side The paranormal elements kept me reading long after I stopped caring about the characters. I don't want to give any spoilers, but the demon/fairy touch thing, the way fairy dust worked, and the depiction of spells and potions were all really cool.
The down side Dulcie is really annoying. She's a total dick to everyone for no reason and she acts like they're the ones being dicks to her. At one point in the narration, she actually comes out and says, "I'm not a bitch." And I thought, "Yeah, dude, you totally are. You have all the classic markers of one." I would've been okay with it if she was a hard-ass because of her job or because of her life or because of something, but none of that comes through in the writing. Dulcie seems more like a sullen, hormonal teenager than a badass who's the best Regulator their department has(as Quillan kept saying she was).
*Spoilers* She has a closet full of clothes, even though she can magic anything she wants to wear. Why waste the money she was trying to save? She can only produce fairy dust from one hand. Is the other one broken? Her magic seems to only appear when it’s good for the story. She also seems a little dumb, so if she’s the top operator I think the office needs a complete overhaul. The characters seemed, for the most part, like regular humans, except for the occasional mention of magic or pointed ears. She had three supposed love interests. There was no chemistry between any of them and she treated all three like garbage. It was really not a good story. Not bad enough to give it one star, but enough to make my eyes roll too many times.
It had all the other elements ok- the world building was decent, and so was the plot. The writing was even decent for this genre. But the heroine ruined it. She looked down on literally every person she met, highlighting their flaws- and this was true even of how she talked about her best friend. At first I thought she was just mean to one or two people, but as the book went on her internal monologue made clear that she thinks poorly of everyone around her. It was such a bummer and energy suck to just read, I quit the book half way through for a couple of weeks before finishing it just so that I'd have read the whole thing for this review.
If this character were a real person, she'd be the kind of person you'd never want to be around socially and who you'd complain about having to deal with at work. Someone that if you had a friend who was friends with her, you'd be gifting your friend books about toxic friendships and frienemies. She's just a mean character. The author could have had something great with a less cruel heroine. (And before those of you who love cruel women jump on it, she mocks the kinky folks who might appreciate her being horrible too.)
I will not be wasting my time on any of the other books in this series. I suggest you, dear reader, don't bother with it either, especially not for your beach reading or fluff reading purposes. All I can think is that this must have been written in the earlier days of the sub genre boom, before the glut of paranormal adventure romance, for so many people to have been into it at one time. Hint to you- don't reread, you will be disappointed.
I found the first chapter was kind of dry and monotonous, although it did provide some necessary information for the story. The story improved pretty quickly at the beginning of the 2nd chapter.
Dulcie, Dulce to her friends is a regulator with the law enforcement. When she gets hit with a spell, and the person who cast it winds up dead. She starts investigating. She is brought into a secret investigation by the Relations Office by an agent from the Netherworld, as a viscious creature called a Kragengen. And the person who called it from the netherworld will have an automatic death sentence once caught.
This is a fun and fairly fast paced story with fairly well developed charaters. There is lots of action and many humorous situations to keep the story flowing.
The Good writing style, editing & a decent mystery even though I knew 'whodunit' a quarter of the way in.
The Bad Dulcie. She's unreasonably surly. All the time, to everyone....except the real criminal. Try as I might I found myself not really caring much about her & didn't feel a connection with her.
